Dehumidification to remove humidity in a cold room

Ventilation is counterproductive in cold rooms and frequent door openings to areas with higher temperatures increase the flow of humid air between rooms.

Cold air in low-temperature warehouses can contain only a very small amount of water vapour. The excess water vapour condenses and forms fog, frost or ice. It is necessary to combine limiting the moisture intake from the outside as much as possible, with implementing moisture absorption systems. DESSICA’s air dehumidifiers for cold rooms are designed to create and maintain very dry air, ensuring a dry, frost-free environment.

The benefits of dry air in cold storage rooms through dehumidification:

  • Prevent the formation of frost and ice on walls, ceilings, and surfaces
  • Reduce the risk of slipping (frozen or slippery floors, which can be dangerous for staff)
  • Improved readability of barcodes on packaging
  • Extend defrosting intervals
  • Reduce equipment breakdowns and lower maintenance costs
  • Lower refrigeration energy consumption

How the air dehumidifier for cold rooms works

DESSICA air dehumidifiers are designed to reduce the humidity level in cold rooms and prevent the formation of frost and ice.

DESSICA air dehumidifiers for frozen goods storage warehouses use two independent airflows that pass through the desiccant wheel in counter current. These two airflows are set in motion by two fans. The desiccant wheel is made of silica gel, a material capable of holding the water vapour contained in the air. The wheel rotates slowly. As the humid air passes through the wheel, it is trapped by the silica gel in a honeycomb structure. The dry air is then directly usable in applications such as being blown into the cold room. The second counterflow air, the regeneration air, serves to extract the moisture held by the silica gel. It is heated to a temperature of 100°C by electric heaters, then passes through the wheel, absorbing the moisture and evacuating it outside the premises or building.

DESSICA air dehumidifiers for cold rooms

The DESSICA air dehumidifiers for cold rooms, IR version, are designed to be installed outside the cold room in a positive environment with a temperature above 5°C.

The DESSICA air dehumidifiers for cold rooms, ICF version, are designed to be installed inside the cold room at a negative temperature.

DESSICA recommendation: For space-saving and ease of maintenance, we recommend an installation in a positive temperature environment whenever possible.

Every cold storage warehouse installation and layout is different and for each one, a number of factors have to be considered when sizing dehumidification and air drying equipment:

  • The frequency of door and dock openings and closings
  • The temperature and humidity levels of the adjacent room with which there is air transfer
  • The climatic conditions to be maintained in the cold room
  • The volume and height of the warehouse (the “chimney effect”)

Installation of the dehumidifier

The installation is always carried out in the same way, recycling the air from refrigerated storage.

The regeneration air is taken from outside the negative chamber and discharged outside the building.

The dehumidifier can be combined with an air curtain to ensure the conservation of hot or cold air in your industrial premises. The air curtain separates two climatic zones.
